MY ROLE

I led the end-to-end redesign from the user research to the usability testing

TIMELINE

OVERVIEW

Job application tracking is tedious and cluttered

Let’s be honest – job application tracking can be a real pain and often leads to lost progress. Keeping up with multiple applications feels tedious and time-consuming. Most users end up tracking everything manually in tools like Excel, Google Sheets or Notion, completely outside the main job search platform, Glassdoor. Seeing this gap, I decided to take on the challenge and redesign the job tracking experience for my product design case study.

SOLUTION

In-Platform Job Application Tracker: Keeping users organised and engaged within Glassdoor

OUTCOMES

Improved job application tracking experience

By introducing an integrated job application tracker that keeps users organised without clutter or confusion

Retained users within Glassdoor

Achieved through an integrated tracker that allows users to manage applications without turning to third-party apps

INITIAL FINDING

Glassdoor can do better for job seekers

Glassdoor aims to make finding and applying for jobs simple and seamless. Yet, without a complete application tracking system, users struggle to monitor their progress and are more likely to switch to external tools.

USER RESEARCH

Users fail to follow up on their job applications

By interviewing users and observing their job tracking processes, I found that:

5/5 struggle to monitor their applied or saved jobs

Users find it confusing to monitor their applications due to the platform’s unintuitive information architecture and experience

4/5 use other tracking tools

The lack of a built-in tracking system leads users to use external apps to monitor their job applications

INTO THE PROBLEM SPACE

There are many stages in the job application process

I broke down the job application journey into 3 key phases and identified the barriers, challenges, and opportunities.

I discovered that Glassdoor’s biggest gap is the lack of an integrated job application tracking system – a feature users most need to manage their applications, stay organised, and remain on the platform.

Next, I evaluated where in the journey lies the opportunity to create the greatest impact, considering both user value and existing constraints.

We can have the greatest impact for the least effort and cost by tackling the application tracking stage of the user journey. The highest opportunity for impact is in the application-tracking stage as it is something Glassdoor, as a platform, has the most control over and is a clear pain point for users. With this insight, I outlined our project's goals:

VALUE PROPOSITION

How might we improve the job application tracking experience?

The current user journey involves going back in forth between the job search platform like Glassdoor and external tracking tools like Excel, Google Sheets, and Notion.

By designing an integrated and simplified job tracking system, users can now manage both job searches and application tracking on Glassdoor, reducing clutter and preventing them from leaving the platform.

GOALS

Minimise redundancy

Minimise redundant and repetitive tasks needed in tracking job applications

Maximise efficiency

Maximise the efficiency of tracking and viewing information on job applications

Improve user experience

Improve user experience and overall feelings toward the job application process

FINAL DESIGN

I focused on delivering a intuitive and familiar job tracking experience

I enhanced the visibility and clarity of the “Job activity” section by restructuring the information architecture and introducing an intuitive tracker that makes the entire experience easy, smooth, and hassle-free.

Labels for every phase of the application process

This will make users easier to organise saved job listings and applications.

List and table views option

Users can choose to view the tracker in list or in spreadsheet-like table which is familiar to them like how they use on other tracking tools.

Search and export

Easily search your jobs and export the data to transfer to other tools like Excel or Google Sheets.

REFLECTIONS

What I learned

Keep the experience familiar

While innovation matters, familiarity is equally essential. I chose to apply a well-known experience in an area that lacked it.

Design meets business goals

Design should address user pain points while supporting business goals. In this project, fulfilling user needs proved to be the most effective way to retain users and boost engagement on the platform
